The agreement between DHI and ISA was formalised at the UN Ocean Conference 2025 by DHI’s CEO, Mette Vestergaard, and ISA’s Secretary-General, Leticia Carvalho.

The International Seabed Authority (ISA) and DHI have entered a partnership to jointly promote evidence-based decision-making, regional environmental planning and monitoring and capacity development in support of the protection of the marine environment.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The International Seabed Authority (ISA) and DHI are pleased to announce the signing of a Letter of Cooperation (LoC) to enhance scientific cooperation and environmental management. The agreement was signed at the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference held in Nice, France, by Leticia Carvalho, Secretary-General of the ISA, and Mette Vestergaard, Chief Executive Officer of DHI.

The LoC formalises a strategic partnership that will support the ISA’s mandate under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to ensure the sustainable and responsible management of mineral resources beyond national jurisdiction. Through this collaboration, ISA and DHI will jointly promote evidence-based decision-making, regional environmental planning and monitoring and capacity development in support of the protection of the marine environment.

Mette Vestergaard stated, ‘The international seabed area is of vital importance to us all. With this partnership agreement, we are one step further in ensuring that decisions about the seabed are guided by science and based on knowledge about the impact on the environment.’

Leticia Carvalho welcomed the collaboration, saying, ‘The ISA is constantly seeking to expand both national and international knowledge of the deep sea, our common heritage, through sound data and to expand capacities for both regional environmental planning and global ocean management. Our collaboration with DHI is an important step in these efforts.’

Under the terms of the LoC, DHI will support the analysis of deep-sea environmental data collected by the ISA over the past three decades. The collaboration will include advisory services and training programmes designed to strengthen the technical and scientific capacity of the ISA’s Member States, particularly developing countries, and to advance regional environmental planning initiatives in the international seabed area.

Danish ocean expertise in global collaborationDenmark has long been recognised for its leadership in marine research, environmental technology and sustainable water management. As an acknowledged Research and Technology Organisation (RTO), DHI combines advanced modelling, scientific tools and field expertise to transform research into practical solutions, from laboratory to the open ocean.

The ISA and DHI have already worked together on capacity building, the development of threshold values and regional environmental planning. This new agreement builds on that foundation and creates new opportunities to support ISA’s work in ensuring environmental stewardship and the equitable use of deep-sea resources.

Shared vision for the ocean’s futureThe ISA was established by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and is mandated to regulate deep-seabed mineral activities beyond national jurisdiction – an area that covers more than fifty per cent of the Earth’s surface. Its dual responsibility is to ensure that the resources of the deep seabed benefit all of humanity, while protecting the marine environment for future generations.

The partnership between ISA and DHI reinforces their shared commitment to informed, transparent and responsible ocean governance, grounded in the best available science.

Safeguarding Brunei’s marine environment: DHI co-hosts key workshop on sustainable coastal development

As Brunei Darussalam continues to develop its coastal areas, protecting marine environments remains a national priority. In line with Brunei Vision 2035 and the nation’s Environmental Protection and Management Act, DHI Brunei co-organised a one-day workshop on Sustainable Environmental Planning for Coastal and Marine Development with the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe).
The workshop brought together around 60 participants from government agencies and the private sector, fostering cross-sector collaboration. It provided valuable insights into best practices, current challenges and innovative strategies for managing Brunei’s marine resources sustainably.
Guest of honour Haji Shaharuddin Khairul bin Haji Anuar, deputy permanent secretary (Infrastructure, Housing and Professional) at Brunei’s Ministry of Development, highlighted the nation’s growing focus on environmental protection. He stressed the need for sustainable planning to safeguard Brunei’s marine resources for future generations, aligning with national goals and addressing global environmental challenges.

DHI’s expertise at the forefront of coastal planningDHI experts led several key sessions, drawing on their extensive experience from both regional and international coastal and marine projects:

Liaw Lin Ji, Head of Environmental Solutions for DHI Brunei and Malaysia, delivered the keynote address. She emphasised the role of science-based planning in building climate resilience and achieving Brunei Vision 2035, as well as United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11, 13 and 14.&nbsp;
Jack Lee Vun Zac, DHI Malaysia country manager and coastal engineer, presented on sustainable shoreline management and coastal morphology in development planning
Dr. Claus Pedersen, regional technical director, spoke on dredging practices and the use of numerical tools to assess impacts at river mouths and along shorelines
Dr. Robert Scott Nichols, senior environmental consultant, shared strategies for responsible marine aquaculture, including monitoring systems that support water quality and regulatory compliance

DHI launches advanced Navigation Simulation Centre in Singapore for maritime risk assessment

DHI announces a major leap forward in maritime simulation with the integration of FORCE Technology Singapore’s advanced assets into its Navigation Simulation Centre. This upgrade allows users to experience the future of maritime risk assessment by transforming traditional 2D views into a fully immersive 3D experience — putting them right on the virtual bridge to navigate real-time, lifelike marine environments with unmatched realism.
Modelling marine and coastal environments worldwideStrategically located in Singapore, DHI’s Navigation Simulation Centre is ideally positioned to support the region’s expanding port and maritime infrastructure. Its advanced capabilities, however, extend well beyond the region, enabling support for clients and projects on a global scale.
Through seamless integration with DHI’s MIKE Powered by DHI software, the Centre can simulate marine and coastal environments anywhere in the world, incorporating site-specific wave, current and wind conditions. DHI releases MIKE 2025 Update 1 with new features for water modelling

DHI has released MIKE 2025 Update 1, the latest version of its MIKE Powered by DHI software suite for water modelling. This update delivers new features and enhancements across key products, aimed at supporting engineers and water professionals in their work. This update is available at no additional cost for clients with an active Service Maintenance Agreement (SMA) or subscription.
 
What's new in MIKE 2025 Update 1

MIKE+ introduces an updated discharge calculation tool that streamlines the estimation of flows through sections from 1D and 2D results directly within MIKE+. Rivers and Collection System models have a new workflow to associate simulations with various rainfall events, saving time and increasing flexibility. Additionally, a new Water Hammer engine brings faster simulations, Linux support and check valve modelling. 
FEFLOW 10 empowers users to present models with enhanced online 3D terrain visualisation including a new Online Maps toolbar that provides full control over visualisation settings and map types, and introduces new features to search for locations, coordinates and more. Additionally, a new ‘Create surface from Supermesh elements’ tool enables the generation of 3D surfaces from point data—no external geological software needed. Plus, the fully integrated smh3d format supports all legacy 3D functions and offers improved mesh repair capabilities to better handle complex geological intersections.
WEST now comes with a built-in compiler and full 64-bit support, boosting compilation and simulation speed. The full transition to the Modelica language brings greater flexibility for advanced modelling. In addition, automatic mass flow tracking makes it easier to calculate and verify component mass balances across the plant, while improved tools for micropollutant and N₂O modelling enhance support for plant upgrades and optimisation. Lastly, the WEST interface is now also available in French.
MIKE WaterNet Advisor now includes a step-by-step user guide that streamlines onboarding and aligns with digital twin workflows. Smart features like disk space alerts, improved contact time calculations and model-based valve support in shutdown planning make it easier to maintain water quality and network performance.
MIKE OPERATIONS features a new MIKE Modelling Workbench that provides a unified environment to prepare, process and visualise data from folders, GIS or the cloud. MIKE SHE users can now build real-time forecasting tools in just hours, thanks to enhanced input raster processing, adaptors and hotstart support. Updated time series tools streamline data import and model setup, while improved Python integration allows users to leverage their favourite libraries.

China's minister of Science and Technology

This week, DHI welcomed a high-level delegation from China led by Minister Yin Hejun from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). The visit was organised by the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (ATV) and hosted at DHI’s headquarters in Hørsholm. It focused on the importance of Chinese-Danish collaboration in water science, environmental monitoring and sustainable water management.&nbsp;
The programme included a tour of DHI’s test facilities and a roundtable meeting with academic and industry representatives. Discussions centred on advancing joint innovation in areas such as digital water solutions, climate adaptation and decarbonisation, with reference to the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between MOST and Denmark’s Ministry of Higher Education and Science.
The visit also marked a recognition of DHI’s long-standing engagement in China, which dates back to the mid-1980s and has since evolved into a broad portfolio of water-related projects across the country. DHI China was established in 2004, is now based in Shanghai and has delivered more than 600 projects spanning flood control, environmental restoration, carbon emission assessments and smart water infrastructure.
Over the past two decades, DHI’s solutions and MIKE software tools have supported national and regional water initiatives in China, including basin-wide management platforms, urban stormwater systems and smart wastewater treatment technologies. DHI has also trained over 20,000 water professionals in China through professional software and knowledge-sharing programmes.

Academic collaboration remains central to DHI’s work in the region. Many Chinese universities integrate DHI’s tools into their curricula and research, and DHI continues to explore new opportunities for educational partnerships and collaborative research.
The DHI visit by the Minister Yin Hejun reaffirmed the importance of cross-border collaboration in tackling global water challenges and the role of science and technology in shaping resilient, sustainable water solutions for the future.

Addressing wetland challenges in South Africa

The Global Wetland Watch (GWW) recently completed a 10-day mission to South Africa focused on advancing global initiatives for wetland management and restoration.
The mission included workshops and field trips designed to address national wetland challenges, explore innovative solutions and advance the creation of a comprehensive global wetland data platform. As wetlands continue to play a crucial role in carbon capture, biodiversity conservation and water purification, the urgency to protect these ecosystems has never been greater. This mission marked a significant step toward providing critical data that will empower countries worldwide to safeguard their wetland habitats.
 
‘This visit reinforced the power of community-driven conservation, proving that sustainable land management can safeguard both nature and livelihoods. It also confirmed our knowledge that protecting wetlands is not just letting nature be alone but can in some cases require significant resources to avoid invasive species damaging the wetlands,’ states Torsten Bondo, Business Development Manager at DHI's Earth Observation Centre of Excellence and collaborator on Global Wetland Watch.
 
The team visited several key wetland sites across South Africa, engaging with over 80 stakeholders from national and local authorities, including environmental and agricultural officials, wetland managers and field specialists. These discussions highlighted the pressing issues wetlands face in the country, including urbanisation, invasive species and climate change, while also emphasising the vital role of data in effective wetland management.
Over the next year, GWW will continue collaborating with pilot countries like South Africa to refine the platform’s capabilities, with the official global portal set to launch in 2026. This initiative will provide countries with essential data on wetland types, habitat conditions and surface water dynamics, helping them to make informed decisions on wetland protection and restoration.
‘Seeing firsthand the delicate balance between human impact, ecological function and conservation efforts in South Africa, everyone in our team left with a deeper appreciation for the urgent need to protect and restore these invaluable ecosystems. GWW work is even more urgent for us now!’, adds Torsten Bondo.
As GWW moves forward, the team remains committed to delivering actionable insights and solutions for the global conservation of wetlands, ensuring these ecosystems continue to thrive for generations to come.
