The issue

By 2025, nearly 6 billion people will live within 200 km of a coastline – close to double the number in 2003. Population growth – along with climate change induced sea level rise, storm surges and heavy rainfall intensity are spurring the noticeable increase in coastal flooding and degradation of ecosystems and coastal regions.

Why it matters

According to The Global Risks Report 2019, published by the World Economic Forum, the most frequently cited risk interconnection was the pairing of ‘failure of climate-change mitigation and adaptation’ and ‘extreme weather events.’ It’s time to take action and implement real measures to protect our coastal communities.
