Visualising groundwater
As an important part of the Challenge Programme (WATER AND FOOD), DHI has developed innovative training material for groundwater managers.
As an important part of the Challenge Programme (WATER AND FOOD), DHI has developed innovative training material for groundwater managers. Groundwater processes are not directly visible to the groundwater user, investigator or manager, yet very important to understand in order to optimally utilize and protect the groundwater resources. In order to improve the understanding of fundamental subsurface processes, an interactive and user-friendly visual tool was developed, which explains a number of groundwater processes through animations of computer simulated results. The animations include illustrations of: the water balance concept, interactions between surface water and groundwater, interference of pumping wells, effect of pumping on the groundwater table for confined and unconfined conditions and solute transport in subsurface systems. The tool has been successfully used in the first training session carried out by IWMI in India.
The tool is web based and located at http://iwmi.dhigroup.com
