Dear Clients and Partners,

A year ago, we launched a new version of our group newsletter. It has now become an important medium for sharing news with you on our knowledge and technology. We hope that you will be inspired by this last issue of 2012 and that you are looking forward to reading our newsletters in 2013.

I take this opportunity to thank you sincerely for your continued trust and support. On behalf of all DHI staff, I wish you a happy and prosperous 2013.

All the best season's greetings,

Asger Kej

For ages, man has been turning to the bountiful waters to feed himself. On the east coast of Denmark, the remains of a man that lived 10,000 years ago in the Stone Age, were discovered. He was found amidst a pile of kitchen scrap – oyster shells, fish bones and bones of seabirds and marine mammals. After an analysis of the N Isotope composition of the remains, it was concluded that the man had lived almost only on seafood (seafood comprised 98% of his diet).

Man loves seafood – he always has.

When compared to terrestrial harvesting, the transition from hunter and gatherer to culturist has occurred very late in the aquatic environment. For hundreds of years, food production on land has been dominated by agricultural products. However, it was only in the last year, that more than 50% of the seafood consumed globally, came from aquaculture.

In many places, capture fisheries have reached their maximum catchable limits. Aquaculture is seen as a way of providing sustainable seafood production to an ever growing, global seafood-loving population. Aquaculture is in fact, one of the fastest growing industry sectors with an annual growth rate of close to 10%.

We are using our global knowledge of water environments to support socio-economically and environmentally sustainable aquaculture production. Our expertise covers a number of topics pertinent to the aquaculture industry. These include:

  • MetOcean conditions
  • Production optimisation
  • Environmental impacts
  • Water quality
  • Disease prevention
  • Modelling of pathogen spread
  • Live feed development
  • Clean technology including re-circulation

We can contribute significantly to the sector in the coming years. We are investing substantially in aquaculture research – from diversification of feed component sources over early warning systems for fish disease to comprehensive Decision Support Systems (DSS) for large scale finfish production.

In this newsletter, you will find many stories and examples of our solutions to aquaculture-related challenges. These solutions have supported the industry in optimising production and facilitating consenting processes.

I encourage you to have a look and be inspired. Furthermore, if you have an aquaculture-related challenge, give us a call.

Yours sincerely,

Jørgen Erik Larsen
