Klimaendringsmodellering med DHI Software ^

Climate Change Modelling with DHI Software

Typically, the climatological input to DHI models is comprised of observed records of rainfall, temperature and sea level. However, DHI has increasingly fielded enquiries regarding the potential effects of future climate change. Applying climate scenarios to physically-based models provides the most reliable means we have today of evaluating the impacts of future climate change.

The central question is thereforewhat influence might climate change have on the model’s output?”

A new software package developed by the International Global Change Institute of the University of Waikato in New Zealand can help answer this question. The Institute, through its commercial arm CLIMsystems, has developed SimCLIM, a computer model for examining the effects of climate variability and change over time and space. SimCLIM is designed to allow the user to integrate, manipulate and analyse spatial and time-series climate data and to run attachable climate-driven impact models (e.g. for hydrology, agricultural crops, or invasive weeds or pests). Importantly, at the core of the SimCLIM System is a flexible, user-friendly capacity for generating scenarios of future climate change. For this purpose, the software database includes the results of a range of recognised General Circulation Models and IPCC scenarios. Using the MIKE Zero Time series Objects model, the SimCLIM developers have incorporated a batch processing tool to allow the user to perturb one or more MIKE Zero time series (.dfs0 or .dt0) directly, based on climate change scenarios generated by the user of the SimCLIM system. This component of the software has been developed in cooperation with DHI’s New Zealand office. Climate Changes on Regional and Local scale

During the past four years, the somewhat abstract predictions of global climate models have been put to very practical use by a Danish research project with active participation from DHI. October saw the closing conference on this highly inter-disciplinary project with the participation of scientists from around the world and from very varied backgrounds.

MIKE 21 and MIKE 3 have been used in 'climate mode' for several issues - some of the highlights include:

  • Modelling the thermo-cline in a lake
  • Changes in stratification and consequences for oxygen depletion
  • Changes in sediment transport and deposition in a future climate

Water resources planning and project reporting

DHI, in coordination with Idaho Department of Water Resources, is extending an existing MIKE Basin model for the Lemhi River. Water users in this semi-arid basin near Salmon Idaho have irrigated their ranch lands for more than 100 years using waters diverted from the Lemhi River and its tributaries. Although the Lemhi River historically supported a rich fishery for salmon, steelhead and bull trout, current populations have decreased due to a multitude of pressures, including low stream flows. Idaho Department of Water Resources, along with NOAA Fisheries and the Bureau of Reclamation, are currently evaluating various water distribution plans that aim to protect minimum river flows for fish passage while also ensuring that landowners receive sufficient water for irrigation.

A MIKE Basin model was developed in 2004 to simulate water distribution along the lower 33 miles of the Lemhi River. DHI is currently working with IDWR to extend the existing model to incorporate an additional 17 miles of the upper Lemhi River and add more than 27 tributary watersheds to the model. Rainfall-runoff models are being developed to provide inflow data to 13 un-gauged tributaries and a groundwater model will be used to examine the complex groundwater-surface water interaction occurring in the upper Lemhi watershed. When completed, the Lemhi River MIKE Basin model will likely encompass more than 500 water users along the mainstem Lemhi and its tributaries.

The completed Lemhi River MIKE Basin model will serve as an adaptive management tool to assist IDWR with water resources planning and project reporting. The model will also be used as an educational tool so that stakeholders can better understand the complex hydrologic and water allocation concepts that encompass water management in and around the Lemhi Basin.

Klimaendringer 'down under' - Prestisjekontrakt ^

Climate change 'down under' - prestigious grant

DHI Water & Environment Pty Ltd in conjunction with the University of Sydney, the NSW Department of Natural Resources, Port Stephens Council and the Jimmy's Beach Restoration Society Inc has been awarded an ARC linkage Grant by the Australian Government.

The aim of this project is to determine the interrelated morphodynamics of flood tide deltas and adjacent estuarine beaches. These relationships will be investigated using the DHI model, MIKE 21 Flexible Mesh version, for a range of different hydrodynamic and morphological scenarios. Long term changes such as system's response to climate change and associated rises in sea level will also be evaluated with MIKE 21.

This third presentation shows examples of new features and improvements including speed enhancements in the coming release of primarily the Marine Software, e.g. the new particle tracking module in the MIKE 21 and MIKE 3 Flow Model FM, new ECO Lab templates, new Marine GIS features, new tools for the prediction of tide and integration of storms, etc.



Filstandarder - Net CDF ^

File standards - Net CDF

DHI is participating in NOAA's work, together with leading oceanographic and coastal modelling institutions, to develop a common file standard for communicating data in flexible mesh formats. The work is based on the NetCDF standard and will facilitate open communication between models and users. One example is DHI and ASA's cooperation on oil spill in the Dubai coastal waters, where oil spill modelling is based on DHI's hydrodynamic results using the NetCDF interface. MIKE URBAN: Show selected

If you need to display only selected records within the editor's grid, you can use the new feature of MIKE URBAN "Show Selected". This feature is implemented for each editor containing a grid (table). The selected records (in case of geometric features) are automatically displayed in the Map. Note that you can save and reload selection using the Save and Load selections commands from Tools | Selection menu item.


Step 1: Right-mouse click on the grid header and select "Show Selected" from the pop-up menu


Step 2: Only selected records are display within the editor grid after choosing "Show Selected". To release the filter, right-mouse click on the grid header again and select "Show All"

Warszawa

New Technologies for Improvement of Urban infrastructure

Modern technologies in urban infrastructure were presented at the New Technologies for Improvement of Urban infrastructure Seminar held in Warszawa, 24 October 2006 at the Warszawa Novotel Hotel Conference Centre. The seminar was organized by the Royal Danish Embassy in Warszawa and DHI Polska Sp. z.o.o

This seminar was open for researches, practitioners, and utilities working in the field of water distribution and wastewater systems.

Specific topics areas covered:

  1. New technologies in urban infrastructure
  2. Modern software tools
  3. Practical experience and case studies

The presentations were delivered in Polish or English with polish simultaneous translation. DHI Software including the latest Polish version of MIKE URBAN was presented at the Seminar. The seminar was attended by more than 120 from various water and wastewater utilities, universities, engineering firms, and other professional companies.

15. GIS ERSI and Leica Geosystems Conference

15. GIS ESRI and Leica Geosystems Conference took place in the Congress Centre of Prague, Czech Republic on November 1-2, 2006. The seminar was organized by ArcData and Leica Geosystems.

This seminar was open for ESRI and Leica Geosystems users, software developers in ArcGIS, ArcSDE, ArcIMS, and other ESRI and Leica Geosystems products as well as for researches, practitioners, and utilities and governmental organisations. More than 600 participants registered for the Conference.

The Prague Congress Centre is one of the largest and best equipped European centres

The conference was opened by Dave Busser's (manager, ESRI), followed by presentations on the latest advances in ESRI GIS Enterprise and there were numerous workshops focused on the new features of the software.

The presentations were delivered in Czech or English with simultaneous translation.

DHI CZ presented the latest version of MIKE URBAN software and its use for Utilities.

Australia

A first of a new series of DHI Streamlines seminars was held in New South Wales and Queensland last month. Many of our local users welcomed this initiative and joined the afternoon seminars for a preview of the latest developments and upcoming features in DHI's software release 2007. Presentations covering the three product areas Urban, Water Resources and Marine were given by local members of DHI's expert software design and operational team including a head of one of the software departments from DHI headquarters. Whilst enjoying the complementary refreshments questions and networking after the presentations showed that new series will come.
