OpenMI is Open SourceThe new international, open standard and software environment for linking water models, the OpenMI, has now become Open Source. The standard has been developed by leading European modelling software vendors and users in a project supported by the European Commission. A number of future users have already received training in the use of the standard and the associated tools, and the first OpenMI compliant models are scheduled for release later this year. DHI plans to make the majority of our software products compliant with the new standard as part of our general policy to encourage interoperability and openness in the modelling community. Look for this logo, if you want to make sure that you are getting OpenMI compliant software:
An advanced non-hydrostatic meso-scale atmospheric model was recently made OpenMI compliant by DHI, and coupled to MIKE SHE. The coupled modelling system is currently being used to investigate the significance of atmospheric feedback in hydrological impact assessment studies, such as land-use change studies. Preliminary results shows that even in impact assessment studies involving relatively moderate changes, feedback may have a significant influence on the simulated impact. The coupled model system will provide the means to identify the situations where feedback will significantly affect the simulated impact and in those cases help to produce more accurate predictions. The plug-compatibility between existing MIKE SHE setups and any OpenMI compliant atmospheric model, across differences in time step and spatial resolutions will ensure that these coupled simulations can be carried out with an absolute minimum of effort. This will hopefully lead to more investigations of real-life situation where feedback and inter-patch interactions may play a role, overall leading to a better understanding of the land surface - atmosphere interactions. More information about OpenMI can be found on www.harmonit.org. The standard and tools can be downloaded from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/openmi.

MIKE URBAN is being well received around the world!MIKE URBAN has now been sent out to thousands of our urban clients and we are getting a lot of positive feedback on the potential of this new product, which combines the best of two worlds - GIS-based user interface and numerical modelling - in one streamlined package covering both water distribution and collection systems. A few weeks ago we announced a series of Webinars for existing and potential clients in order to help you getting started - Webinars are presentations via the internet where you can sit in your office and get online presentation of some of the new features. The introduction webinars have been very well received and many people already used this opportunity to learn more about MIKE URBAN. Please see www.dhisoftware.com/webinar/index.htm A number of MIKE URBAN seminars have been planned around the world and we have had around 150 participants for the first seminars which has been held in Spain and China (See pictures via link from www.dhisoftware.com/). Many more seminars are planned in the coming months in Sweden, Germany, Italy, Baltics, USA, South Africa and more. Please contact your local DHI office for detailed information about these seminars in your area. You can find more information about MIKE URBAN at www.dhisoftware.com/mikeurban

From the WinHEC Fast Lane Area..our experts on spot reported the following: Microsoft chairman Bill Gates opened the third decade of Windows, on April 25th at WinHEC (Windows Hardware Engineering Conference), by announcing the availability of Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and Windows Server (TM) 2003 x64 Editions. These 64-bit enabled OS editions provide new opportunities for memory and computationally intensive applications in areas such as gaming, data warehouses, 3D graphics and scientific computing. The x64 OS versions, which are expected to be the mainstream Windows platforms by the end of 2006, were received with enthusiasm by the WinHEC audience. One of the highlights of the WinHEC event was the x64 Fast Lane, in which more than 20 partners demonstrated their x64 solutions to the 2800 WinHEC attendees. In partnership with Fujitsu-Siemens, DHI succesfully demonstrated x64-enabled versions of DHI Software running on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. As such, DHI is now among the world's leading software vendors supplying native 64-bit software, utilizing the performance enhancements and extended memory capabilities of the Windows x64 platform. Take part in our pollIn the wake of news announcements lately regarding DHI and Windows x64 platform some may find it slightly provacative to initiate an poll on the interest in the DHI Marine Software products on Client/Server platform using Linux as Operating System. However, now and then we recieve requests about the availability of DHI marine Software products (MIKE 21, MIKE 3 or LITPACK) for Linux. Presently it is our impression that adoption of Linux OS has only limited relevance for our present users and for most of potential users. But is our 'by intuition' sense correct? Please make you opinion come through and take part in the poll: DHI Marine Software on Client/Server platform using Linux as OS ?

DHI Software demonstrates assimilation of satellite earth observations for marine forecastingDHI Water & Environment has in consortium with GRAS A/S and ARGOSS demonstrated the feasibility of near real time operational assimilation of satellite data in the Water Forecast, which uses DHI Marine Software. The project is supported under the European Space Agency Earth Observation Envelope Programme as an Earth Observation Marked Development initiative. The project has undertaken the task of providing an operational Water Forecast service with improved prediction skill by integrating satellite earth observation data. Within half an hour of observation, satellite data of sea surface temperature are processed, quality assured and available for the Water Forecast system. The data are assimilated into MIKE 3 and improved forecasts are issued for the benefit of sea farmers, entrepreneurs, ferry captains, municipalities and ocean leisure activities to mention just a few. The project has also investigated data processing and assimilation techniques for the integration of satellite earth observed chlorophyll-a and wave height data. An extensive model validation service is presently being developed. This service will provide performance statistics of the forecast system by comparing model predictions with independent in situ and satellite data. The system and software are being progressively improved and expanded in close collaboration with customers and the improved performance is being monitored continually. As an example a tailor made Water Forecast web product has been provided to the fish farm Musholm Lax, who has successfully used this in planning of operations and feeding control. For more information on the project please contact Karl Iver Dahl-Madsen or Jacob V. Tornfeldt Sørensen.
