MIKE URBAN 2D Flooding ^

From release 2009, modelling of floods in urban areas has been made even easier through the full integration of 2D flood modelling into the MIKE URBAN modelling suite. The whole modelling process from pre-processing through to animated outputs and other results presentations can now be done from within the GIS based MIKE URBAN user interface.

The integrated 2D modelling includes the following new features:

  • Seamless coupling of pipe and 2D overland flow model
  • 2D model resolution and model area independent of DEM
  • Editing of MIKE 21 2D model parameters from within MIKE URBAN
  • Launching coupled pipe and 2D overland flow simulations
  • Presentation of 2D overland flow results as time series, profiles or maps (maximum maps or animated maps)

MIKE FLOOD 3-way coupling ^

Floods can be very complex. For example, rising water levels in a river passing a city may not only produce bank overflow and flood the neighbouring areas, but may also give rise to backwater effects in the underground pipe network. This in turn may cause sewer overflow and the flooding of streets in areas, not directly adjacent to the river itself.

This is just one of many examples where multiple domains need to be taken into account in your flood modelling work. MIKE FLOOD has been enhanced in the 2009 release, allowing for a very flexible coupling of the two 1D engines for sewer and river networks and the 2D overland flow engine providing flow transfers and feedback mechanisms between all three engines. This model is extremely versatile and is indispensable when investigating complex flood scenarios in urban areas located in riverine and coastal areas.

True 64-bit simulation engines ^

In 2005 DHI announced the decision to move the most computationally heavy software programs to the new Microsoft® Windows® x64 platform. The high-performance 64-bit environment supports much larger addressable memory than the 32-bit environment and furthermore offers better performance in terms of speed and reliability. Prior to this announcement DHI had joined Microsoft Corp’s Technology Adapter Program (TAP). The TAP gave DHI a first mover advantage on the new 64-bit computing platform. Furthermore Microsoft® selected DHI as one of three companies for the official Microsoft® launch of Windows® x64 as an example within scientific computing.

The first programs that were migrated to the Windows® x64 platform were the flexible mesh version of the three-dimensional model, MIKE 3, for water flow and the Spectral Wave model, MIKE 21 SW. Due to lacking 64-bit versions of third party components these x64 versions were not ready for an official release on the MIKE by DHI DVD. However, with the 2009 release we can finally offer our users true 64-bit versions of MIKE 21 wave and flow models, MIKE 3 and the 2D component in MIKE FLOOD. Besides the flexible versions also the classic single and nested grid versions have been migrated to the Windows® XP and VISTA® x64 platforms, and full integrated use including dynamic coupling of models/modules is possible.

Customers running on one of these 64-bit OS will in addition to leverage the larger memory access with the 64-bit CPUs also experience an approximate 5-15 pct performance gain.

An application example pushed beyond the limits of the 32-bit hardware is a dynamically coupled wave-current model (MIKE 21 SW and HD) with interactions between wave-depth, wave-currents and wave induced flow. With a flexible mesh comprising approximately 60,000 elements this is not possible using 32-bit memory access.

Tips og hint til modellering ^
MIKE 11 Results Extraction Utility ^

Prosjektnyheter ^
MIKE Flood selected as standard ^

MIKE Flood has been chosen by the two northernmost German Federal States (Bundesländer) -Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg – as a standard tool for the assessment of flood maps in both states. Flood maps and flood risk maps will be modelled using both MIKE 11 and MIKE Flood, depending on the characteristics of the rivers.  With rivers crossing state borders, a standard tool was needed for both Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg.

The authorities in Schleswig-Holstein had been using MIKE by DHI for several years and DHI-WASY is happy that MIKE has now been chosen as the “official standard”. Both states purchased special licenses for the flood studies, which will be transferred to the consultants. This setup ensures that software costs remain predictable during the 4-year project phase. DHI-WASY will provide dedicated training courses and support for the consultants during that period. After the project phase, it is anticipated that both states will retain their professional licenses. DHI-WASY is looking forward to a good and long-lasting co-operation with the authorities and consultants in Northern Germany.

Solving Surface \ Groundwater Interaction Problems in Australia with MIKE SHE ^

There is a growing awareness in Australia that the interaction between surface water and groundwater has been overlooked in the management of water resources.  This interaction is vital for understanding the complex hydrologic impacts of land use and climate change, particularly in an environment where the demand for water exceeds the availability of the resource. Historically, surface water and groundwater were handled separately, both technically and institutionally. This may have performed well when considering each in isolation, but there is growing recognition that the interaction between surface water and groundwater needs to be managed integrally. MIKE SHE is being recognised for its world leading capability in this area. This is justified by numerous independent reviews ranking MIKE SHE as the world’s most comprehensive and scientifically sound model for surface water - groundwater interaction.

MIKE SHE integrates many of the water management issues that Australia is facing including evaluating wetland management, surface water impact from groundwater withdrawal, landuse impacts, climate change impacts, environmental flows assessment and water quality. MIKE SHE’s user-friendly ability to simulate the entire land phase of the hydrologic cycle has made it the tool of choice for a wide array of applications.  These include applications as diverse as groundwater recharge and river interaction in the Northern Territory, salinity and drainage management in Western Australia, groundwater related urban flooding in New South Wales, plantation and wetland interactions in South Australia and land use impacts in the Australian Capital Territory.

Development of Storm Tide Decision Support System Model Suite ^

Historically the Gold Coast has been affected by a limited number of severe storm events. But with a changing global climate there is reason to believe this frequency will increase with cyclones tracking further south and becoming more frequent. In response to this DHI and Gold Coast City Council devised a modeling approach that allows for a number of design cyclone scenarios to be run through a suite of models to produce inundation maps of the Gold Coast to aid in emergency response and decision making procedures.

The Gold Coast waterways system is very complex with waterways extending inland and the Broadwater connected to the open ocean through the Seaway, Jumpinpin and Moreton Bay. To accurately predict the inundation associated with a tropical cyclone, high resolution of key areas within the region is required to resolve the timing and accumulated storage in the waterways prior to the occurrence of maximum water levels.

The numerical model consisted of coupling the hydrodynamic model Mike21 HD with the spectral wave model Mike21 SW and adopting a flexible mesh to account for the high resolution bathymetry requirements. The numerical model was successfully calibrated against measured field data surveyed during the occurrence of the 2007 East Coast Low and subsequently used to calculate inundation maps in response to 108 generic cyclones provided by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.
