God Jul og Godt Nytt År!
Vi ønsker alle våre forbindelser en riktig God Jul og et Godt Nytt År!
MIKE BASIN – Global recognition
In 2008 we have seen a dramatic increase in MIKE BASIN installations around the world.
MIKE BASIN is a versatile multipurpose package for river basin planning. It is the “Office package” for practitioners working with river basin issues such as testing best water use practices, assessing irrigation demands and crop yields, estimating nutrient pollution load impacts, data analysis, etc.
The comprehensive analytical toolset is provided in a GIS environment that is intuitive and streamlined to help authority staff make structured analyses and create transparent and reliable decisions.
With the increasing demands for water for consumption, food and energy production and for establishing sustainable environmental conditions, we envisage an increasing demand for simple, but powerful, river basin planning tools like MIKE BASIN.
“MIKE BASIN’s versatility and French language version make it popular among French consultants and authorities in French speaking countries. Backed up by the DHI France office there is nothing comparable for French clients” (ref. Valerie Banneville from DHI France).
MIKE BASIN has also gained fantastic popularity in most Central and Eastern European countries and has become a standard tool for river basin planning and Water Framework Directive work. “The ability to expand the MIKE BASIN with additional features and creating customised reporting tools for the decision making has been an important impetus for its success” (ref. Jan Krejcik from DHI Czech Republic office).
Also in countries in Asia such as Thailand and China, MIKE BASIN has been successfully applied and currently forms the backbone in an number of World Bank funded decision support systems currently being developed for large river basins around the world.

Background: The MIKE URBAN software development project, known as the WD Facelift, was initiated in 2008. It focuses on improving the Water Distribution Module of MIKE URBAN.
The development includes many general features as well as missing MIKE NET features, which have not previously been implemented in MIKE URBAN. Numerous features have been developed this year, and we will continue to describe these in more detail in the Network newsletter.
MIKE URBAN WD 2009 – Results Tables Results tables (Model Results | Results table) have been expanded by summary fields, which are displayed below the table with the list of results. The summary fields can be displayed for all elements or for the filtered elements.
The summary fields are generated for every numerical result item:
- Minimum, maximum, average: minimum, maximum, and average value
- Sum of inflow, sum of demand: represents the total junction node demand or inflow within the selected area (or the whole network). This information is available only in the WD mode.
Illustration: Summary fields are generated for the result items below the main grid

Dialogue on Water, Energy and Climate Change [WECC] WECC Principles for actions emanated from a Preparatory Meeting for 5th World Water Forum held at the 11th International RiverSymposium at which more than 140 attendees gathered. The meeting was convened by DHI together with several partners: the World Water Council, the International RiverSymposium, the Fenner Centre for Environment (Australian National University), the International Water Centre (Brisbane), and the Australian Water Association. Further information and WECC principles for actions are available at: http://www.dhigroup.com.au/policy.aspx
Streamlines 2008 - Software Showcase and Networking Event – Sydney, Brisbane & Perth, Australia MIKE by DHI software users across Australia were briefed on new features in the upcoming release of MIKE by DHI in 2009, including developments in progress for future releases. The presentations were delivered by Douglas Graham, Ole Petersen and Stefan Szylkarski. Local staff also made available some feature projects for informal discussion prior to and after the official presentation. Refreshments were served during the networking session. Over thirty people attended each event in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, and we hope to see more next year.
2nd Argentine User Seminar, 18-19 November The beautiful backdrop of Jacaranda trees in blue spring dress decorating the avenues of Buenos Aires led us to Centro Naval, the venue for this year’s MIKE by DHI user seminar. The exotic scenery filled us with expectations and optimism. Knowing at the same time that more than a hundred people had announced that they would very much like to attend provided their workload allowed, made it difficult to avoid smiling that morning. A repeat or even an improvement on last year’s success seemed within reach. When having ensured that there were no technical hitches in the Versailles-styled auditorium everything promised to be plain sailing.
Our smiles widened as the day went on; our agent Martin Marazzi was in top form, user presentations had excellent application examples addressing local problems and solutions, and participants were extremely interested in the presentations and in networking during the breaks. By the end of Day One the efforts of our agent’s staff; Lucila, Vartush, Viviana, Yesica, Rudolfo with assistance from Silvia Rafelli, bore fruit with 80 external participants registered in the guest book. Participants this year included ‘old DHI friends’, some from last year’s seminar, and many newcomers. These included young graduates and people from different regions of the country, San Juan, Santa Fe and outskirt municipalities of the city of Buenos Aires.
The user presentations this year were:
- Implementación de herramientas de modelación ecológica matemática en la evolución de los impactos de las obras hidráulicas sobre la calidad de agua de la cuenca del Río Salado”, by DIPSOH, Dra. Nancy Neschuk & Lic. Veronica Guerrero Borges. Veronica gave an overview of the water quality conditions and initiatives considered to improve these in the river Salado water shed. DIPSOH have been using MIKE 11 HD for many years in their design and evaluation of river works and Veronica will now use this in combination with ECO Lab to evaluate and optimise mitigating measures.
- Aplicaciones marinas”, by Ezcurra & Schmidt SA, Ing. Sergio Schmidt & Ing. Gabriel Danieli. Sergio showed examples of MIKE 21 and MIKE 3 applications from projects in Argentina and abroad. They have been MIKE users for the past 12 years and have never regretted this investment, according to Sergio who complimented the quality and efficiency of the hotline support
- Plan de saneamiento de la Cuenca de Matanza-Riachuelo” by Dr. Ángel Menendez, UTN-INA, who heads the modelling team studying the pollution from the Mantanza-Riachuelo river into the Rio Plata, under the supervision of Jorge Boll, SAyDS. The impact on the coastal strip of the current sewer outfall and future proposed sewer outfall extension is being analysed and simulated using MIKE 21 ECO Lab. Angel is a recognised modeller and model developer in Argentina. He uses his own models to test ideas as he has the possibility to change and control everything. However, MIKE models are extremely good, flexible and robust, he says, and all the tests with his own models and exercises help him to further understand and recognize the MIKE Models used in his modelling group.
Some 40 people participated in the software training on the second day of the seminar. In parallel sessions demos of MIKE Flood, MIKE Basin, MIKE Urban and MIKE 21/3 were made. Good feedback and discussions arose in all sessions.
It certainly seems that MIKE by DHI now is entering its spring season in Argentina. It’s definitely not the ‘last tango’ in Buenos Aires. |
