Offshore Wind Farms

Several countries have added increased use of sustainable energy resources on their agendas. As a consequence of this the wind industry is keying in on offshore wind farms.

The offshore wind industry plans to boost the development of large scale wind farms with many turbines in European waters and elsewhere within the next 10 years. The design, construction, operation and sustainability of such large marine structures impose major hydraulic and environmental challenges.

DHI has contributed substantially to the development of several offshore wind farms in Danish, German, British and Swedish waters. With respect to design optimisation, assessment of environmental impacts and environmental management of large-scale marine construction projects, DHI possesses a wealth of experience and an array of advanced problem-solving tools, which are unsurpassed world-wide. The tools range from numerical models to laboratory analysis and physical model tests.

DHI’s activities are founded on the establishment of hydrographic and environmental parameters for design and operational purposes and environmental impact assessment. It is our belief that without the support of a dedicated and fine-scale hydraulic model system, key aspects of offshore wind farm developments related to optimisation of the design, reduction of efforts related to construction works and maintenance operations and reduction of environmental impacts will be inadequately resolved.
