Approval of drinking water installations

Danish GDV approval of drinking water installations

In Denmark, all polymeric materials used in the drinking water system must be approved and evaluated for release of harmful substances if the materials are intended for household use. The products must obtain an official approval popularly known as a GDV approval (Godkendt til DrikkeVand – approved for drinking water), formerly known as VA approval. GDV approvals concern all installations that are connected to the drinking water supply network including water taps, fittings, mixer taps, water coolers, etc.

What is a GDV approval?
GDV approvals are issued to products that do not affect the drinking water quality, and which do not release substances harmful to human health. Consequently, products must not affect the taste or smell of the drinking water. Furthermore, products must not liberate too high concentrations of undesirable substances into the drinking water. Such undesirable substances in the drinking water include phthalates (a common plastic softener), metals, phenols, and colorants, degradation products from antioxidants etc.

How to obtain a GDV approval
To obtain a GDV approval the products must be assessed and then tested. First of all it must be ascertained if the product contains any undesirable substances. This is done by examining the product composition of parts that are in direct contact with drinking water, and by testing the product for migration of undesirable substances into the drinking water. Testing must be performed at an accredited test laboratory. If the test results are satisfactory, then the GDV approval can be issued.

Must I have a GDV approval?
GDV approvals are only issued for products that are connected to the drinking water supply system. Products in contact with the drinking water but not connected to the water supply system are covered by the EU regulation on food contact materials. Whether the installation is covered by a GDV approval or by the food regulation, products must not liberate substances that are harmful to human health.

At DHI we have extensive experience in both GDV approvals and the regulation on food contact materials.
