Marine and Hydraulic Structures

Large infrastructure transportation and energy projects including bridges and power plants require the optimization of a series of hydraulic aspects.

The design of road and railway crossings involves hydraulic processes both with respect to environmental issues and constructability. Wave loads and scour protection around bridge piers and the safe installation of tunnel elements are some of the areas involving DHI’s expertise.

Likewise, power plants, including hydropower, also involve both environmental and constructability procedures, ranging from the impact of dam construction on surrounding areas to hydrodynamic loads on outlet structures.

DHI provides expert consultancy on the design of marine and hydraulic structures such as water intake and outfall structures, flood gates, dams, spillways, wave power machines, marine outfalls, etc.

DHI services include conceptual designs as well as the optimization of final designs. The typical aspects addressed include the dispersion of heated water, siltation in intakes and pump systems, air entrainment, the recirculation of heated water, discharge optimization, scour protection, and wave and current loads.

DHI’s hydraulic modelling facilities provide excellent possibilities for carrying out tests for flow optimization, the determination of impact loads, scour protection, etc.

The investigations are further supported by DHI’s suite of numerical models for micro and macro scale analysis. These models include the MIKE 21 &3 suite of programmes, the code DIFINI for the hydraulic design of diffusers, and the CFD code NS3. The latter is a multi-purpose tool used both for internal flows and for flows with free surfaces.
