Urbanisation – the challenge of the century

By 2015, nearly 4 billion people are expected to live in urban areas. With the rapid expansion of infrastructure networks and the inescapable impacts of climate change, it has become crucial to manage water environments efficiently within cities.

Some of the present and future urban water-related challenges include:

  • meeting the increased demand for drinking water
  • alleviating the greater threats to water quality
  • increasing efficiency and reliability in water distribution
  • reducing energy and resource wastage in treatment plant operations
  • improving storm water and wastewater networks

We empower you with solutions and build your capacity to help you handle your unique urban water-related issues – independently and sustainably. Our solutions combine state-of-the art technology and time-tested methodologies. They focus on planning, design and operation of urban infrastructure to manage city water better. We work closely with our clients and stakeholders to deliver solutions that are appropriate, cost-effective and environmentally responsible.

Read our Newsletter to find out more about the work we’ve done in the field of 'Urban Water' through a few of our highlighted stories. If you have any questions or would like to know more, feel free to drop us a line.

Implementation of Urban On-line Water (UOW) system in Zurich
We set up an Urban On-line Water (UOW) modelling system in Zurich. This will help authorities gain actual information about the hydraulic conditions, the mixing of water from different sources and the water quality in the network.

Using compact filtering technology for storm water treatment
In order to help Denmark’s wastewater infrastructure adjust to increasing precipitation intensity and storm water runoff, we tested two filtering technologies: Flexible Fibre Filter Module and Hydrotech Disc Filters. These compact systems allow for decentralised treatment of storm water.

Water leakage reduction using Leakage Monitor
Our Leakage Monitor has effectively helped to manage leakages in the water distribution networks of the Czech Republic, and maintain them at stable and economically optimal levels.

Increasing water quality by optimising treated water release in Australia’s Gold Coast
We optimised the timing of recycled water release into the Gold Coast Seaway in Australia. In so doing, we increased the amounts of water released, while improving water quality and minimising operational costs at the same time.

SIMPS – a simple software solution for simulations of pressurised sewer networks
We’ve developed a simple software solution for running hydraulic and water quality simulations of pressurised sewer networks. The software will give our client the ability to provide time- and cost-efficient quotes within a short time-frame.

Optimising Indian wastewater treatment with the SWINGS project
We’re effectively contributing to sustainable and low-cost wastewater management in India and consequently helping to meet rural Indian demand for safe water.

Using acoustic signals to improve flow measurements
We worked with HydroVision GmbH to develop a new acoustic flow meter using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling. With the help of acoustic signals, the new device can deliver accurate flow measurements.

Safe bathing water in the heart of Copenhagen Harbour
In collaboration with the City of Copenhagen and Copenhagen Energy (the provider of the sewer data), we developed an innovative Bathing Water Forecast (BWF) System for Copenhagen Harbour.

/ THE ACADEMY: Enhance your knowledge

We provide training in many aspects related to urban water management, such as water safety planning and optimising sewage treatment. We also provide training in using our urban software tools such as MIKE URBAN.

This year we have more than 30 urban water courses scheduled worldwide. Our office in Brazil for instance, is organising two urban water courses in August:

Other planned courses that will give you the opportunity to enhance your knowledge:

  • WEST: Advanced modelling of wastewater treatment plants, South Africa, 10 September 2014
  • MIKE URBAN COLLECTION SYSTEMS: Introduction to the modelling of collection systems, Denmark, 17-18 September 2014

For further details on all our courses, click here.

We're also organising seminars and User Group Meetings on the topic of Urban Water Management. A highlight:
