The world's water consumption rate is doubling every 20 years — twice as fast as the population growth rate. By 2025, water demand will exceed supply by 56%.

The critical need for water to sustain all aspects of human activity has driven us to inhabit floodplains and deltas close to rivers. Today, 82% of the global population lives in these areas and is exposed to a high risk of flooding.

We constantly strive to develop a robust understanding of the physical water environment as a precursor to any analyses influencing decision-making. Applying state-of-the-art modelling technologies and analytics ensures that we achieve this. We work closely with our clients and stakeholders to appreciate the water management issues that may affect their project outcomes. In so doing, we develop solutions that are appropriate, cost-effective and environmentally responsible.

Developing a hydrologic model for the Okanagan Basin
In collaboration with Summit Environmental, we developed a hydrologic model for the Okanagan Basin Water Board (OBWB) to help authorities assess water needs and availability in the Okanagan Basin. This will assist the OBWB with shaping current and future water resources management policies for the basin.

In recent years, rising water levels in the Gudenå River and higher rainfall intensities have sparked concerns about future flooding risks. In order to identify and implement new management/maintenance measures for the river, we developed an integrated hydraulic model based on our MIKE by DHI software suite components.

Modelling future flows of the Nile River
Climate change and rapid population growth are expected to affect the amount of water the Nile River brings to the riparian countries. Working with the Met Office Hadley Centre, we've developed new regional climate projections as well as a hydrological and water resources model for the Nile Basin Initiative and United Nations Environment Programme.

Following a devastating flood in the Morava catchment in 1997, a wide range of mitigation measures were proposed by various stakeholders. We used state-of-the-art tools to help them analyse the efficiency of these measures with respect to the required investments.

It's essential that model information be made accessible to surface water and groundwater professionals who have little or no specialist knowledge of hydrological modelling. Our decision support tool – a customised user interface that enables easy access to hydrological models through the web – serves this purpose.

Using DSS to forecast floods in the Chao Phraya River basin
During the 2011 monsoon season, severe floods devastated Thailand, leaving hundreds dead and billions of dollars in economic losses. To help Thailand improve flood management in the future, we developed a flood forecasting and flood management Decision Support System for the Chao Phraya River basin.

Integrated hydrology and hydraulic model of the Elbow River watershed
In Calgary (Canada), we helped the Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development and the University of Calgary develop an integrated dynamic modelling system for the Elbow River watershed. This system will help them understand the potential impact of future land-use and climate change scenarios on the hydrology of the watershed.

Protection and management of surface and groundwater resources depends on knowledge and technology. In our training courses, we share our experiences on topics such as catchment management, water resources, as well as monitoring and mapping of groundwater quantity and quality.
