New Online Flood Forecasting Developments

  New Online Flood Forecasting Developments

DHI Water & Environment is implementing an increasing number of real-time flood forecasting systems world-wide. The forecasting technology is moving fast and the new systems we implement are utilising a number of available Internet facilities.

The flood forecasting systems are based on MIKE FLOOD WATCH and are running fully automated on industry standard PC’s with access to the Internet.

An example is the Smithfield flood Forecasting System in West Virginia, USA (Client: Canaan Valley Institute, WV USA), implemented in 2002.

Real-time data collected via DIADvisor and quantitative precipitation forecast from the US National Weather Service are downloaded from the Internet prior to each forecast simulation. When the data preparation is completed MIKE 11 calculates a forecast of flow, water level and flood extent for the next 24 hours. Finally the results are disseminated through the Internet. All the daily forecasting procedures for this application are controlled 24/7/365 from a PC at our DHI Inc. office in Newton, PA, USA. New forecasts are automatically issued every hour. The citizens in Smithfield are now able to follow the river situation and extent of flooding under critical flood events hour by hour from their own computer. Flood forecasts in Cyberspace! Most of our MIKE FLOOD WATCH applications currently under development are tailored in a similar way to enable fully automated forecasting services in accordance with client specifications.

DHI Water & Environment together with IMDC from Belgium has also just completed the first phase of the implementation of a countrywide Flood Forecasting System for Flanders in Belgium (Client: Ministerie van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap, Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium). The pilot system is now running on a PC at the Clients office in Antwerp, with automatically issue of 3 hourly forecasts and upload of the results to the Internet. The implementation of a second phase of the project is now started and at the completion in 2003 50 % of the rivers in Flanders will be covered by the new MIKE FLOOD WATCH release based on ArcMap GIS.
