The Water Framework Directive was officially published on the 22 December 2000. The implementation of the directive in the member states will demand better knowledge about all sources having an impact on the water quality and the ecological status of European surface waters. The integrated river basin approach (and the division into administrative river basin districts) is a key issue in the new water framework directive. Such an approach obviously require development of management tools integrating all relevant physical and biological aspects of water resources within the river basins. DHI has long adopted this approach during the development of the MIKE software products.
Catchment Version 2 (a stand alone tool presently in Danish only), which is developed as a support tool for the public authorities to map and structure data on the load from point- and non-point sources has just been released by DHI. The software has primarily been developed to the Danish municipalities as they have started to gather information about the load from every household in the rural areas. The software is based on GIS and can communicate with most types of standard databases.
